WELCOME TO SKYNET SYSNEWS!
--------------------------
This is the new UL Computer Society news service available to all
Computer Society members. This service was created to allow members to
keep up to date with current happenings within the Computer society, no
matter where they are in the world and how often they log into Skynet.
It is a very low volume service, so don't worry about being flooded with
worthless and irrelevant information. The service is designed to replace
the motd as the primary source of relaying news to members and is
designed to overcome two of the motd's main problems: lack of space and
lack of exposure. Each announcement is a seperate article (like this)
and there is no limit on the length, this solves the space problem. Each
announcement is available through mail, nntp and through a command line
application, this removes the exposure problem and allows us to
distribute news to users who aren't logged into skynet every day.
As has been mentioned, you can access the sysnews service in several
ways. When you log into skynet you will be told whether there are any
unread news atricles, these articles can be read by running 'news'. The
man page for news (access by running 'man news') explains several other
options available to you.
Because we realise that not everyone is a regular skynet user, we also
distribute the news announcements through mail and nntp. The
announcements are available through the read-only CompSoc-News mailing
list. You can subscribe to this list by send a message with the word
"subscribe" in the body to compsoc-news-request at skynet.ie or by signing
up at:
http://mailman.csn.ul.ie/cgi-bin/listinfo.cgi/compsoc-news
New users are automatically subscribed to the mailing list.
The news announcements are also cross posted to skynet.soc.comp
newsgroup on news.csn.ul.ie (accessable through ltin also).
If you wish to discuss anything mentioned in news announcements then
mail your query to sysadm at skynet.ie (if the mail relates to skynet) or
to compsoc at skynet.ie (if the mail relates to the Computer Society).
