Firstly, we wish to warn current users of skynet that we have had more
disk failures on our /home partition. If any of you have anything
important stored on skynet, it should be backed up immediately. Also, I
would urge people who use skynet as their primary email address to back
up regularly until we can get things back to a fully stable situation.
Secondly, we would like to welcome all our new users. Skynet is a
community of people sharing a common interest in technology. All but one
of our servers currently run on Debian GNU/Linux. The one that doesn't
run Linux runs Solaris. We provide users with services such as an email
address, web space, a shell account, IRC and others. These services are
all installed and maintained by a, currently small, group of volunteers
who give freely of their time to offer the best service possible with
our hardware.
Thirdly, I ask anyone with enough interest and a willingness to learn to
join our admin team. Currently, most of the work falls on a few
shoulders. This can make maintainance, upgrades and the addition of new
services quite difficult. The work does require a good deal of knowledge
about GNU/Linux, Solaris and the different services we run, but all this
knowledge can be learned. Anyone who decides they'd like to help out can
also depend on a wealth of knowledge and help where necessary (even if
it's just RTFM!) from the current skynet admins. If you'd like to take
part in the maintainance of the network, send an email to
alladmins at skynet.ie stating your interest. Someone will get back in
touch with you about it.
Lastly, I would urge any users who haven't yet paid for their accounts
to do so before the end of week 3. After this time, accounts that have
not been paid for will be archived. We will be removing unpaid-for
accounts completely at the end of week 5, meaning any email sent to the
account will no longer be delivered, and the user will have no access to
any of skynet's non-public services. The dates for this are:
Archival of accounts : Friday Week 3 : Friday 15th October
Removal of accounts : Friday Week 5 : Friday 29th October
For any issues relating to accounts and payment, contact
accounts at skynet.ie. For any technical queries check our user guide
first at www.skynet.ie/guide and if you can't find what you're looking
for, email alladmins at skynet.ie.
The Computer Society AGM is being held this evening, Monday 4th October,
at 6pm in Meeting Room 5 in the Students Union. This should only last
around 30mins to 1hr. We would like as many members as possible to show
up for this meeting, and we would particularly like the new members to
get involved in the running of the society and the administration of the
servers. So show your face and help the society to keep growing.
