We've got a few events lined up for you over the next few weeks.
Regular events. Every Wednesday we meet for Lunch at 1pm in The
Stables. We also meet on Wednesday evenings for drinks in The
Scholars/Javas at 9pm.
This Semester we've also started "Hack Nights". We're meeting every
Tuesday evening at 7:30 in the Students union (either the common room,
the Clubs and Socs office or Room 1/2). The idea is that we meet for a
few hours, order in some pizza and bash out some code. For the last
few weeks we've been working on the new homepage and that will be out
main priority until it's live. If you have some perl, python, (x)html,
php, sql or css experience come along with a laptop. Even if you
don't have any experience or a laptop come along and there will be
people there to help guide you. The two nights we've had so far have
been fun and productive.
Other Events. Next week, we'll be running our first Wavehunt. The idea
is that you bring along a laptop (with a wireless card), Sony PSP or
Nintendo DS and try and track down a moving battery powered wireless
router. The winner is the fastest person to correctly identify the
router carrier. We'll help you set up some handy tools like
Netstumbler and give you a map, so you know where to look for the
carrier.
Next week there is a tech oriented art & music festival going on in
the Limerick School of Art and Design. It's called tweak, details can
be found on http://tweak.ie/ . Most of the workshops need to be booked
in advance, so mail bonjour.tweak at gmail dot com if you're
interested
We'll be kicking off Wavehunt at 7pm outside The Scholars/Javas next
Wednesday, the 24th (week 3).
The week after, on Wednesday the 1st of October, Steven Young from
Google will be coming down to talk about GFS and clustering. Steven
manages clusters of Google servers which store a wide range of
Google's date. GFS (or Google File System) is a distributed file
system developed by Google to provide efficient, reliable access to
data using large clusters of commodity hardware. Steven will be
talking at 7:30pm in the John Holland Lecture theatre (D1-050).
Stevens talk will be followed by our regular weekly Pints in Javas.
We'll keep you updated as more events roll around. See ye soon,
David
