"Engaging the Millennial Generation - Challenges and Opportunities in
Third Level Teaching"

Conor Carroll,

Department of Management & Marketing, Kemmy Business School

Wednesday 11th November at 12noon

In MC2005

The Millennial Generation pose significant pedagogic challenges in how
they acquire and process knowledge, in comparison to other generations.
Students now acquire knowledge through a blend of learning styles and
platforms, ranging from the traditional to the high tech. Within higher
education, we must actively try and engage students so as to enrich
their learning experience. There are common interdisciplinary
educational challenges and opportunities that have emerged. This
interactive discussion focuses on practical solutions that can be
deployed to meet these challenges. The purpose of the session is to
actively debate and discuss central issues surrounding our teaching to
the millennial cohort of students.

Aspects of the discussion will include: students having the notes (what
impact does it really have?), attendance, use of readings, managing
student expectations, encouragement of interaction in a classroom
setting, large class teaching, the use of academic-corporate educational
partnerships, utilisation of technology to enhance learning - leveraging
web 2.0 and social media, development of innovative assessments methods
that boost experiential learning and augments the student learning
experience, amongst others.
