The Centre for Applied Language Studies, CALS, is pleased to announce
the following guest lecture:
'Let's get lexical'
Dr Ivor Timmis, Reader in English Language Teaching, Leeds Metropolitan
University, UK.
Abstract:
The publication of The Lexical Approach by Michael Lewis in 1993 created
a lot of interest in the teaching of collocations and chunks, but the
momentum does not appear to have been sustained. In this session, I
will argue that, while it may no longer be appropriate to speak of a
lexical approach, a positive legacy of the lexical approach could be a
principled lexical dimension, which can be integrated with other
methodologies. I will outline the principles which underpin this
lexical dimension and illustrate how these principles can be applied to
language learning materials.
