Dr Catherine O'Connor (University of Limerick)

'"We were always full and plenty thank god": Interpreting conflicting
narratives of 1950s Ireland'





Dr Catherine O'Connor specialises in gender and oral history. She is a
post-doctoral Research Assistant on the IVRLA project 'Changing Ireland:
Migration and Cultural Heritage' at UCD. She is also engaged in the
conduct and digitisation of interviews for the University of Limerick
Oral History Project, initiated in September 2008. Dr O'Connor was
previously a post-doctoral researcher on the IRCHSS project 'Inventing
and Re-Inventing the Irish Woman, External Influences on Gender
Construction, 1760-2005' at UL (2007-08). Her most recent publications
include '"The smell of her apron": issues of gender and religious
identity in the oral testimonies of Church of Ireland women in Ferns
1945-'65' in Cronin, N., Crosson, S. and Eastlake, J. (eds.) Anail and
Bheil Bheo Orality and Modern Irish Culture (Newcastle upon Tyne, 2009),
pp.127-136;  'Mixed marriage, "a grave injury to our church" : an
account of the 1957 Fethard-on-Sea Boycott' in The History of the
Family, vol.13, no.4 (2008), pp. 395-401 and 'The Church of Ireland
Diocese of Ferns, 1945-'65' in Busteed, M., Neal, F. and Tonge, J.(eds.)
Irish Protestant Identities (Manchester, 2008), pp.113-125.  






The Seminar will take place at 5.30 p.m. in Room SG1 (Summerville House)
at Mary Immaculate College.
