The University of Limerick Environmental Committee
cordially invites you
to
a ceremony during which
Professor Don Barry, UL President,
will plant the first tree in UL's new orchard
DATE: Thursday, 8th April 2010
VENUE: the green area between the Main Building, the PESS Building and the Schrödinger Building.
TIME: 12h30
The UL orchard will have fruit trees planted in a manner reflective of traditional parkland. The choice of apples will be varied, ensuring that there is a spread of harvesting from mid August to October. Selected trees will be compatible for pollination, and there will be 'historic', 'local to the type of estate' and more recently developed varieties. This will allow for tree, crop and taste comparisons. There will be a balance between eaters and cookers, 'keepers' and those best for immediate consumption. It is hoped that this orchard will be an aesthetic addition, that it will serve as an informal learning space and that it will be an amenity that can be enjoyed by the campus community. In addition, the orchard will allow for active biodiversity protection. Please join us for this ceremony marking the development of the UL orchard.
