Congratulations to our Anime Manga Society who secured the Best New Society for a Large College at the Board of Irish College Societies Annual Awards in the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone on Wednesday 14th April www.bics.ie <http://www.bics.ie/> . Our commiserations to our Music Society and Games Society who failed to secure an award but it is nonetheless a major boost to our societies on campus as this is the third year in a row that UL Societies have scooped National recognition for their efforts, compared to just 2 awards in the previous 9 years. Unlike sports on campus that in large part have governing bodies dictating the calendar year, societies face the year generally with a blank canvas and it’s down to the creativity of the members to generate an interesting calendar of events to stimulate interest and memberships. The goal of the Anime Manga society at its inception last year was to introduce people to Japanese media and culture, to date this has involved screening of Japanese Anime movies and TV series in the Kemmy Building, workshops teaching Japanese art styles and drawings, Japanese language and attending Anime conventions around the country amongst other fun filled weekly events. It’s great to see UL students come to the fore on the National stage and well done to our 24 strong delegations on their representative efforts on Wednesday

Regards,

Paul

More Clubs & Societies news in brief since the Easter break

Debating Union reaches two finals in three weeks

The Debating Union has made history recently when second year debater David Hartery reached the final of two Irish competitions. This is the first time a UL debater has been in a final in almost a decade. David, who has been speaking for just over a year, became a finalist at the DCU Intervarsity on March 27th and the NUI Maynooth Intervarsity on April 10th, making him the most successful UL debater since Deb U won the WIT Intervarsity in 1999. This success has been heralded as a great step forward for the Debating Union, which has been striving for competitive success for several years.

This year saw UL Windsurfing Club (ULWC) win their third Intervarsity in a row. The event was hosted by UL at their base in Castlegregory 2 weeks ago. The entire club membership and the community assisted with the final delivery and running of the event. The results were as follows-for the beginners UL won the bronze in the women’s and men’s by Elaine Crosse (Business studies) and Brian Stewart (Mechanical Engineering). In the intermediate UL won the gold and silver, by Robert Stewart (Environmental Science) and Ronan Farrell (Architecture) respectively. Kevin O’Connor (PE teaching and Geography) won the gold in the advanced race by a clear margin. Nearly €2000 was raised by the club for the Irish Cancer Society and the RNLI over the weekend in question thanks to the generous donations from the other colleges and the local community. The club ably assisted once again by the locals spent all day Monday performing a beach clean-up on Brandon bay, despite the wind and rain spirits were up and a great experience had by all throughout the entire weekend. The Intervarsity was made possible with help from our sponsors, River Deep mountain high, Spar Castlegregory, Jamie Knoxx, Snap Printing, Wind wise, IWA and last but not least a big thank you to our main sponsors Ulster Bank.
