The department of Mathematics and Statistics invites you to a seminar by
Dr. Mark Cooker (School of Mathematics, University of East Anglia, UK):

Title: The mathematics of violently moving water waves

Abstract: When a steep or breaking water wave hits a harbour wall we
are used to seeing a splash and damage to the wall. This talk is about
what is happening during the brief time that a breaking water wave is
strongly interacting with the structure. For part 1, I show some old
theory that is quite good at explaining the large accelerations and the
sudden changes that occur in the fluid velocity field. In part 2, I
present some recent theory that may explain better the finite excursion
of the free surface when a fully unsteady wave undergoes impact. These
flows are important for understanding and predicting the large impulsive
pressure fields and the forces that storm waves can unexpectedly exert:
on harbour walls; on ships in head-on seas; and on pedestrians.

The seminar will take place on Friday 5th February, at 4pm, in A2-002.
