ATTN: ALL 55 YEARS OLD WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT READING AND UNDERSTAND
ITS VALUE -

               CHILDREN IN LIMERICK NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Barnardos is expanding its literacy tutoring programme in Limerick,
aimed at improving children's success in school and their chances in
life, by helping children become better, more confident readers.

The programme is based in school and pairs children with reading
difficulties with adults aged 55 years and older.

The volunteers work with the children over the school year improving
their reading skills by listening to, reading with and encouraging the
child.
Benefits for the child are:

* Increased reading ability and higher scores on standardised
reading tests.

*       Improved attitudes to reading.

*       Greater confidence.

Teachers report that the programme helps them to target their classes to
meet the individual child's needs. Meeting the volunteers also provided
children with positive adult role models.

Volunteers do not need special qualifications, just a commitment to
children, a passion for reading and an understanding of its importance.
BARNARDOS are seeking volunteers who can commit to working with a
child, helping them with their reading 2-3 times a week over the school
year. BARNARDOS provide volunteers with full support, supervision and
training.

BARNARDOS are currently seeking more volunteers for this programme, with
a view to completing recruitment and training by the summer of 2010
