DERMOT BYRNE (accordion), CATHERINE McEVOY (flute)

Altan's Dermot Byrne in concert today with UK-born Catherine McEvoy on flute.

Dermot Byrne is from Buncrana, Co. Donegal. He guested on two Altan recordings "The Red Crow" and "Island Angel" before joining the band in 1994. Dermot learned his music from his father Tomás Ó Beirn who comes from Teileann area of South West Donegal. Dermot had a rare opportunity to meet many of the old masters of Donegal fiddling while growing up. These included the legendary John Doherty, Con Cassidy, James Byrne, Tommy Peoples, Danny Meehan and many more. They made a great impact on the young Dermot who developed a unique style of button-accordion playing. Dermot has guested on collaborations with many great musicians including Seamus and Manus McGuire, Sharon Shannon, Frankie Gavin, Pierre Schryer, Tim O'Brien and the late jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. His eponymous solo recording, which he has reissued recently, received great critical acclaim.

Originally from Birmingham, UK, Catherine McEvoy is one of finest contemporary exponents of the Sligo-Roscommon style of flute playing, both lyrical and driving. The tunes played on this recording combine classic traditional pieces from the Connaught flute tradition, as well as new additions to the Irish flute repertoire like the compositions of the late Josie McDermott and East Galway's Vincent Broderick. With solid piano accompaniments by Felix Dolan, one of the best known players in the US.
