Conversations in the Consortium in UL and MIC

Feedback with Face

Dr Fiona Farr

Wednesday, 17th February 11.00-12.00 in MC2003 (UL)

This session will focus on issues around lecturer - student feedback for
both summative and formative purposes. Acknowledged by many to be an
invaluable educational tool for students' development, feedback also has
the potential to be extremely face-threatening, for both those on the
giving and the receiving ends. With specific reference to teaching
performance feedback in the context of language teacher education
programmes, typical behavioural and linguistic patterns will be
discussed in a move towards identifying a framework to help describe and
comprehend this complex activity. Descriptive data and examples will be
used from a range of sources including computerised corpora of spoken
and written feedback, as well as diary and survey data from both
students and lecturers. The session will be interactive in nature and
aims to draw on the experiences of the participants in an attempt to
gain deeper understandings into this very essential aspect of our work
as academics.

All welcome!

Peer Observation of Teaching - what is it and why do it?

Dr Elaine Vaughan

Wednesday, 17th February @ 12pm in G06a (MIC)

This session presents Peer Observation of Teaching (POT) as a mechanism
for professional development, and aims to open a discussion of how we
can make the most of observing and being observed by our peers. A tiered
approach to the POT will be presented, and the focus will be on how we
can use it to talk about - and learn about - our teaching in a
collaborative, mutually beneficial and equal relationship (cf. Gosling,
