The department of Mathematics and Statistics invites you to a seminar by
Dr. Guy Kember (Engineering Math Department, DalTech, Canada):

Title: Networked Neuronal Control of Heart Rate

Abstract: Neural control of the heart and in particular, its
sympathetic component, is generally thought to reside primarily in the
central nervous system. However, accumulating physical evidence shows
that sympathetic control of the heart may be exerted through a network
that includes not only (i) the central nervous system (central neural
command) but also (ii) intrathoracic extracardiac ganglia and (iii)
intrinsic cardiac ganglia. Neuronal "networking'' between and among
sympathetic neurons serve to process regional blood flow demands before
transducing them to cardiac motor neurons that influence the various
regional cardiac indices. Global stability of sympathetic control with
and without a network are analytically compared. The network model is
also shown through simulation to provide an alternative explanation of
Mayer waves where their origins and sporadic nature are linked to
"localized'' neuronal network instability.

The seminar will take place on Friday 19th February, at 4pm, in A2-002.
