A concern often expressed by users of the mental health services in
Ireland is that there is an overemphasis on biological or medical
approaches with a corresponding under emphasis on the psychological or
social aspects (Vision for change 2006). This imbalance may be
attributable to a variety of factors such as: training and background of
the referring agent (typically a medical doctor), a lack of availability
of psychological therapists in the local area, or lack of knowledge and
understanding of the various psychological therapies which may be
available.

The first in a proposed series of studies used a postal survey to elicit
information on the nature and availability of psychological therapies
and how users typically access them. Participants were general medical
practitioners (accessed through ICGP listings) and psychological
therapists (accessed through websites of various accrediting bodies).
Results suggest that a minority of psychological therapists (in the
target area) are psychologists; that there is a dearth of reliable
information available to referring agents regarding different
psychological therapies and which kinds of problems each are more
suitable to addressing; that referral decisions are often based on
pragmatic (e.g. personal contacts) rather than problem focused ('best
fit' between service user needs and service provider) criteria; and that
there is a lack of clarity regarding what constitutes a psychological
therapist and the appropriate education, training and accreditation
standards.
