Media Representations of Women Writers in Franco's Spain

The 1950s are notable for a boom in women's writing in Franco's Spain.
At the time, the sheer abundance of emerging women writers provoked
surprise and more than a hint of disquiet among literary critics and
commentators alike. Notwithstanding continuing patriarchal prejudices,
many of the new commercial literary prizes established by the publishing
houses seemed to have had high regard for this new generation of women
writers and they achieved unprecedented success. Such success saw them
increasingly feature in the media, with considerable column inches
devoted to their activities. Such media features offer an illuminating
insight into this period of Spanish history showing how the fiercely
patriarchal Francoist society struggled to reconcile the emerging notion
of the woman as writer with her more traditional role as wife and
mother.
