You are invited to hear acclaimed novelist and playwright, Joseph O'Connor read from his work in the Common Room, Millstream Courtyard, University of Limerick. This reading is part of the Millstream Common Room Writers Series organised by the School of Languages, Literature, Culture and Communication, UL and sponsored by Campus Life Services, UL.

About the author


 


Joseph O' Connor was born and lives in Dublin. He is a prolific and celebrated novelist. His best known work includes Cowboys and Indians, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize, Inishowen, Star of the Sea and its critically acclaimed successor, Redemption Falls. In 1994, he also published a collection of comic essays, The Secret World of the Irish Male, which became a bestseller in Ireland. His other non-fiction includes Even the Olives are Bleeding: The Life and Times of Charles Donnelly; The Irish Male at Home and Abroad; and Sweet Liberty: Travels in Irish America.  His stage plays are Red Roses and Petrol, The Weeping of Angels and True Believers. His screenplays include A Stone of the Heart; The Long Way Home; and Ailsa.  

 

Among his awards are The Sunday Tribune/Hennessy First Fiction and New Irish Writer of the Year Awards (1989), the Macauley Fellowship (1994), the Miramax Screenwriting Award (1995) the In Dublin Magazine Award for Best New Irish Play (1995); and a Fellowship to the New York Public Library's Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers for 2005-2006 <http://www.nypl.org/press/2005/csw0506.cfm> . Star of the Sea, which was published in 26 languages, received the Prix Littéraire Européan Madeleine Zepter for European Novel of the Year.

 


The novel Ghost Light is due for release in June of this year.
