The aim of my presentation is to provide a perspective on design =
practices that allows a focus on the movements and the transformations =
that lie behind designed products (which I call arti-facts), which =
usually lose contact with their own original conditions of design and =
production. The idea is to put forward an approach that refuses more =
traditional forms of social or technological determinism and that =
focuses on the ongoing mutual shaping of heterogeneous elements. The =
perspective that I will suggest emphasizes relational, material-semiotic =
and emergent elements and does not privilege cognitive, intentional or =
interpretative aspects on one side, or structural and technological ones =
on another.

Clearly in line with an Actor Network Theory perspective, not only =
designed artifacts but also designing subjects (and so their =
interpretations, intentions and expert knowledge) and their practices =
are results of the design process. Subject, organization, the social and =
the technical, established practices and expert knowledge are, in this =
view, all results and not causes or preconditions. In such a framework, =
they all have to be explained along with the final shape of a designed =
artifact and not used as elements to - causally - explain it. To witness =
the birth of a new artifact by mapping the trajectory of the formation =
of its shape and by methodically following the object of design in its =
formation means unavoidably to witness the birth and formation of =
subject designers (or a collective subject designer), the network of =
relations that sustains their practices and expert knowledge, and the =
organization (material, semiotic and spatial-temporal) within which a =
specific design process take place.

Through a detailed and ethnographically informed analysis of the design =
of a new artifact (a piece of jewellery or an Interaction design =
prototype) I will introduce and discuss the notion of Thing as a twofold =
concept. The notion of thing in fact refers to both the gathering of =
different elements that are drawn together (I here draw on Heidegger, =
1964 and Latour, 1999b), and the problematic issues - in process of =
definition - around which different elements gather (I here draw on =
Latour, 2005; Pels, 1998; and Brown 2001, 2005). As two faces of the =
same coin, the thing as a gathering of elements and the issue that =
gathers them shape one another.

Through the notion of thing, I will be able to distinguish two =
underlying and opposing logics or tendencies (namely an objectifying =
tendency and a thinging tendency) that lie behind the creation of a new =
design and how its elements unfold and relate in practice.

The first tendency brings the thing as a problematic issue toward one of =
many possible re-solutions through a progressive definition and the =
incremental accumulation of irreversible actions. The second tendency =
instead re-affirms the problematic nature of the thing as an issue, and =
the differential nature of the elements in the thing as a gathering. The =
interplay between these two dynamics help to understand and explain how =
the object of design and its designing collective shape one another.

In particular, I will argue how the objectifying tendency resonates with =
the concept of lack (as in Knorr-Cetina's take on Lacan, see =
Knorr-Cetina, 1997, 2001), the material mode of design described in =
Flusser (1999), and the notion of circulating reference elaborated by =
Latour (1999a). The thinging tendency instead resonates with the notion =
of plenty in anti-lacanian literature (e.g. Deleuze and Guittari, 1976, =
1983; Castoriadis, 1987), the formal mode of design in Flusser (1999), =
and it suggests the need of a notion of pro-ferences as to extend Latour =
framework (aimed to understand the making of science) in design =
practices.

The design process is thus rendered as a trajectory that moves within a =
chain of key events. These events represent turning points in the =
trajectory of co-formation of a design artifact and its designing =
gathering, and they are marked by the prevailing - even momentary - of =
the one tendency over another.
