Dear Staff and Students,

There is currently an educational/developmental project being undertaken by a fledging Sudanese/Irish NGO called Ducuum - of which many staff and students here in UL are heavily involved. This particular project is centered around supplying high quality and relevant third level textbooks for a University in a city called Bor, in the Jonglei State in Southern Sudan. This region has been brutalised by decades of civil war, with education in any form being very rare indeed.

Jonglei is about the size of England and has an official population of about one million people, though in actuality that figure could be in excess of ten times that figure. The University which we are working with is the only Institute of Higher Education in the entire region and exists as a stand-alone structure with students sleeping in tents. Despite these inhibitions, the lecturers there are highly trained and motivated.

The main frustration in the University is caused by a critical lack of quality textbooks - they don't actually have any. Ducuum intend to radically change that statistic.

In essence, our goal is to collect quality and culturally neutral books from Irish Universities and ship them to Sudan.

The subject areas prioritised by the lecturers in Sudan are:

*	Physics, Biology, Chemistry (all variations)
*	Mathematics
*	Computer Science
*	Business (i.e. accounting, finance, economics, marketing, management, insurance)
*	English,
*	Education, &
*	International law

While these are the advised categories, they are not exclusive.

In UL, we are in talks with the Glucksman Library and are appealing to Heads of Department, Lecturers, Masters/Phd Students, Undergrads and indeed all Department Staff to please assemble what they can from friends, family and colleagues.

The Students' Union have kindly agreed to provide us with a storage facility for books collected, which will be finalised shortly. For the moment, if you manage to assemble some books, please contact David or Tomás via email or on the numbers shown below.

We intend to ship the books out to Sudan around late June - all going well. Our target is to collect in the region of 7000 - 9000 books in order to fill a 20' container and justify the expense of shipping.

If you would like to find out more about Ducuum and how you can help in our book drive, Nyiel Kuol, David or Tomás will be happy to help.

Sincere Thanks,

Ducuum.
