Title: A reconsideration of Samuelson's multiplier-accelerator model
Abstract: The year 2009 marked the 70th anniversary of the publication
of Samuelson's Multiplier-Accelerator model, which laid out a rigorous
mathematical formulation of the theory of Business Cycles. We note that
today's economic climate is very similar to when Samuelson described his
model, so the global response to the present crisis in the form of
fiscal stimulus motivated a reconsideration of Samuelson's model. The
original Samuelson model is extended with a fiscal stimulus program that
is modelled as a discontinuity in the government expenditure. We will
see the effects of a discontinuous governmental expenditure policy as a
control methodology and also how a simple modification of the original
model yields some interesting dynamics in terms of periodic orbits and
chaotic fluctuations.
