artists-in-residence at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Limerick</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>, The
Chieftains will perform in concert, joined by <st1:PersonName w:st="on">Mícheál
Ó Súilleabháin</st1:PersonName> and students of UL's Irish World Academy of
Music and Dance. With a career that spans forty-one years and forty-one albums,
The Chieftains are not only Ireland’s premier musical ambassadors but
also the most enduring and influential creative force in establishing the
international appeal of Celtic music<b><span style='font-weight:bold'>. P</span>addy
Moloney,</b> the group’s founder and front man, first brought together a
group of local musicians in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Dublin</st1:place></st1:City>
in 1962, fashioning an authentic instrumental sound that stood in sharp
contrast to the slick commercial output of most Irish music at the time. The
group’s first four albums, recorded between 1963 and 1974, established
their worldwide reputation even as the group continued to perform on a
semi-professional basis. In 1988, they joined forces with fellow
countryman Van Morrison on <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Irish Heartbeat</span></i>
which began an historic series of collaborations including recordings with Joni
Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones, Sting, Sinead
O’Connor, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder and many others. They also continued
their acclaimed work in film soundtracks, including the double Grammy-winning <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Another Country</span></i>, with performances by such
country and bluegrass stars as Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson,
Chet Atkins and Don Williams. They returned to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Nashville</st1:place></st1:City> in 2002 for <i><span
style='text-transform:uppercase;font-style:italic'>Down The Old Plank Road</span></i>,
their 40<sup>th</sup> career album, featuring such special guests as Vince
Gill, Lyle Lovett, Earl Scruggs, Alison Krauss and others. Their continued
residency at the <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Limerick</st1:PlaceName>'s <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">World</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Academy</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>
takes shape annually with a celebratory concert featuring students of the BA
Irish Music and Dance, the highlight of which is a rousing finale when almost
