color:black'>In the days coming up to the Easter Rising, the historian and
leader of the Volunteers, Professor Eoin Mac Neill, engaged in a heated debate
on the nature of the word ‘tribe’. He believed that it was
inherently a pejorative and dismissive term which represented no clearly
definable political construct or community and he took great exception to the
way in which English legal historians (in particular) tended to use it to
describe the social structures of pre-Norman <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Ireland</st1:place></st1:country-region>. A hundred years later, it
is clear that Mac Neill failed to convince even the small band of Old Irish
language scholars of the validity of his arguments. In this paper, I look
at some of the evidence for ‘tribes’ in early Irish history and
their counterparts in Germanic and Anglo-Saxon cultures as well as some of the
contexts in which the word is used in modern parlance and ponder what such
usage implies about intercultural relationships. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
