style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'>ABSTRACT<o:p></o:p></span></font></b></h2>

<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify;text-autospace:none'><font size=2
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:11.0pt'>The competition between
metals and polymer-based composite laminates to be the main material used in
the future generation of wide-body aircraft structures is fierce. Although
composite laminates have excellent specific strength and stiffness, good
corrosion resistance and are amenable for automated manufacturing technologies,
their full potential is not yet fully exploited. New manufacturing
technologies, such as automated fibre placement machines, combined with
advances in analysis tools for composites, enable the design of new laminate
configurations that will tackle the main critical design drivers for composite
aircraft structures: buckling, damage tolerance, and bearing resistance. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify;text-autospace:none'><font size=2
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:11.0pt'>The main analysis tools
developed to predict the onset and propagation of failure mechanisms in
laminated composites will be briefly described. These analysis tools, combined
with the associated experimental techniques for the measurement of the relevant
properties, are necessary for the development of non-conventional laminates
with improved mechanical properties. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify;text-autospace:none'><font size=2
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:11.0pt'>Having developed accurate
analysis tools, three types of non-conventional composite laminates will be
described: laminates with curved fibres in each lamina, named variable
stiffness laminates, to increase the buckling resistance, laminates with fibre
orientation angles other than the traditional 0вк, 45вк, and 90вк
to improve the damage tolerance, and hybrid titanium-CFRP laminates to increase
the bearing resistance. The results obtained indicate that non-conventional
laminates enable the design of lighter structures without incurring in higher
manufacturing costs. Non-conventional laminates drastically increase the
buckling and failure loads of composite structures loaded in compression and
have the potential to increase the compression after impact of composite panels
and, therefore, to increase their operating strains. Furthermore,
non-conventional laminates based on both titanium and CFRP increase the
specific bearing strength of composite bolted joints, and have the potential to
significantly decrease the mass of composite structures.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

"Times New Roman"'>Dr. Pedro Camanho received his PhD in Composite Materials
from the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
 of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">London</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> in 1999. In
1999, he joined the <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Institute</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Mechanical Engineering</st1:PlaceName> and Industrial Management as
Director of the Structural Integrity Unit and the Department of Mechanical
Engineering of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
 of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Porto</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> as Assistant
Professor. Since 2008 he has been Associate Professor at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
 w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Porto</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p class=MsoPlainText style='text-align:justify'><font size=2
face="Times New Roman"><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:
"Times New Roman"'>His main research interests are the structural integrity of
advanced composite materials, continuum damage and fracture mechanics, size
effects on composites, fatigue of composites and new concepts for advanced
composite materials for aerospace applications such as hybrid and variable
stiffness composites. Dr. Pedro Camanho is Guest Editor of Composites-Part A, a
member of the Editorial Board of Computers, Materials and Continua , and is the
Editor of the book &laquo;Mechanical Response of Composites&raquo;, European Community on
Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) Series, Springer, 2008. Dr.
Camanho was invited to give several plenary lectures, including a plenary
lecture in the 7th EUROMECH Solid Mechanics Conference (2009). He is an elected
member of the Council of the European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH) since 2010.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
