<p><font size=2 color="#333399" face=Arial><span lang=EN-IE style='font-size:
10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:#333399'>Abstract: </span></font><font
size=2 color="#333399" face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:
Arial;color:#333399'>The majority of the valley glaciers in the dry regions of Central
Asia, <st1:place w:st="on">Hindu Kush</st1:place> and Karakoram show a more or
less dense debris cover of their tongues. The dependence of the thickness and
composition of the debris layer the ice melt is either enhanced, or reduced.
Because of the large spatial extent of these debris covered glacier tongues and
the comparatively low altitudes, ablation and the total melt water generation
is strongly influenced by the debris cover. The Commission for Glaciology
investigates several glaciers in the major mountain ranges of High Asia in
order to map and characterise the supra-glacial debris cover and to develop a
melt relation which can be applied based on remote sensing information. A
successful, spatially distributed ablation model will allow us to quantify the
summer discharge of the major glacier regimes in these generally dry regions. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p><font size=2 color="#333399" face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial;color:#333399'>In addition, it is known that several of the
glaciers in these regions show periodic fast advances, which could be related
to surge-type mechanisms. Remote sensing observations of glacier surface velocities
are currently investigated, in order to better understand the processes behind
these fast advances. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
