potential property enhancements available with polymer layered silicate
nanocomposites (PLSNs) have been well documented over the past 15 years and
yet, despite the huge research interest in these materials, there are still
relatively few available in commercial applications today. Two factors that
make a significant contribution to the slow uptake of these new materials are a
lack of understanding of (i) the property-structure relationships in PLSNs and
(ii) the influence of processing on structure and vice versa. In this
presentation the results of work currently being carried out at Queen’s
University Belfast to establish process-structure-property relationships in
polypropylene-clay and PET-clay nanocomposites will be reported. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Harkin-Jones</span></font></st1:PersonName>, FIMechE, FIChemE, FRSA, is
Professor of Polymer Engineering in the School of Mechanical & Aerospace
Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast. She obtained a first class
honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCD in 1983 and then moved to
Belfast to work as the production & technical manager of a local polymer
processing company for 5 years before commencing a PhD in rotational moulding
at Queen’s university Belfast. She obtained her PhD in 1992 and took up a
lectureship in Queen’s in 1993 where she has remained since.</p>

research are in processing of polymers and materials development, particularly
polymer nanocomposites. She also has interests in the optimization and simulation
of free surface moulding processes. She currently leads a number of
multi-million pound research consortia in the processing and modelling of
polymer nanocomposites. She has published over 100 papers and won research
funding in excess of £5 million. She serves on the editorial boards of 4
international journals and is a member of peer review research panels in the <st1:country-region
w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Ireland</st1:country-region>,
<st1:country-region w:st="on">Norway</st1:country-region>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
