font-family:Arial'>There is currently an educational/developmental project
being undertaken by a fledging Sudanese/Irish NGO called Ducuum - of which
many staff and students here in UL are heavily involved<span
class=apple-style-span>. This particular project is centered around supplying
high quality and relevant third level textbooks for a University in a city
called Bor, in the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Jonglei</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">State</st1:PlaceType> in <st1:place w:st="on">Southern Sudan</st1:place>. This
region has been brutalised by decades of civil war, with education in any form
being very rare indeed.</span><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Jonglei is about the size of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">England</st1:country-region></st1:place>
and has an official population of about one million people, though in actuality
that figure could be in excess of ten times that figure. The University which
we are working with is the only <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Institute</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Higher Education</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> in
the entire region and exists as a stand-alone structure with students
sleeping in tents. Despite these inhibitions, the lecturers
there are highly trained and motivated. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

The main frustration in the University is caused by a critical lack of quality
textbooks - <b><span style='font-weight:bold'>they don't actually have
