hierarchies and markets as modes of production was challenged, when Benkler
drew on early manifestations of the open source software (OSS) phenomenon to
propose “a third mode of production” that he labeled “Commons-based peer-production”
(CBPP). Despite the widespread availability of examples of CBPP and a well
articulated call for further research on the phenomenon, very few of the
extensive number of papers that cite Benkler’s work go beyond an
acknowledgement that the phenomenon that they studied is an example of CBPP. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:125%'><span style='font-size:11.0pt;
line-height:125%;font-family:"Calisto MT","serif"'>The objective of this study
is to<i> conceptualize viable commons-based peer-production through an analysis
of the production of open source software</i>. In doing so, we seek to understand
how OSS communities, as the most prevalent form of CBPP, (i) leverage the
information processing and resource allocation advantages and (ii) overcome the
organization and motivation problems. Our analysis is based on a secondary
analysis of 524 papers published between 1998 and 2009 using Activity Theory as
a conceptual lens. Overall, the study concludes that although the degradation
of the commons in the traditional sense is not a major issue in CBPP (due to
the non-rival nature of resources), failure to continually nurture and improve
the commons is a major threat to the viability of this mode of production.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Business Information Systems, University
College Cork, Ireland where he is engaged in the Open Code, Content and
Commerce (O3C) project.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:125%'><span style='font-size:11.0pt;
line-height:125%;font-family:"Calisto MT","serif"'>He earned his Ph.D. in the
Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at Ben-Gurion University of
the Negev, Israel. His dissertation focused on the impacts of information and
communication technologies (ICT) on personal activities such as teleworking,
teleshopping, telelearning, telebanking, telemedicine, and teleleisure. The
research, which yielded interesting results pertaining to the effects of ICT on
leisure activities demand, activities, and travel, resulted so far in six
journal and conference papers, as well as a number of seminar and conference
presentations_. His research also focuses on management of information systems
(IS) and, in particular, Organization of Open Source Projects (including
business modeling with implementation of Open Source technologies), Social
Networks, Mobility, Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) and Quantitative
Research Methods. He is currently researching how peer production is organized
on exploring open source development through an activity theory lens. He can be
